// a- a a+ menu malden dsme - operators of the thames ditton miniature railway our next open day is sunday 1 july trains run from 2pm please can we remind you not park on the private car park opposite our entrance and avoid blocking residents driveways. local parking restrictions apply which the police do enforce if cars block residents driveways. only prebooked disabled parking is available on site. full details for the 2018 season are on our open days web page. show open days web page show our open day video about us malden and district society of model engineers ltd. is located in thames ditton surrey. our miniature railway is known as the thames ditton miniature railway. the ground level railway is for the large scale trains. the elevated railway is for the smaller scale trains. we hope you will be able to visit us during the year and enjoy the atmosphere of the railway. we have been running passenger trains on the miniature railway for for over 66 years. a few of our locomotives tom snoxell 'tom snoxell' is now ready for the 2018 season following a boiler and chassis overhaul. this club engine was built in 1986 and is named after our late president and is based on welsh narrow gauge practice. look out for the loco at willowbank station and come for a ride. jack after a lot of hard work and a new boiler 'jack' our hunslet locomotive is running again. the loco is pictured near old oak on the railway during a running in turn. see the locomotive on our railway and come for a ride harwin harwin is based on lima locomotive works 2-6-2 design from the usa. the castings were imported from australia a number of years ago, and construction was started by bill knox who had completed the chassis and cylinders. after bill passed away the part completed locomotive moved to nick and graham taylor who were friends of bill. harwin was completed in october 2016. harwin is pictured at willowbank station in october 2016 on one of its first running sessions. russell a whr locomotive russell is a 2-6-2t narrow gauge steam locomotive originally built in 1906 for the north wales narrow gauge railways (nwngr), but most famously associated with the original welsh highland railway (whr). and was orignally built by hunslet locomotive company. this is a scale model in 7½" gauge with charles its owner. volunteering / membership what we do, why we do it, how we do it and why you should consider joining us. over it long history our society has brought together people with a shared interest of railways, engineering. our purpose is to encourage the creation of a wide range of models and to create a 'community' of members willing and able to help and support each other in the enjoyment of the hobby. we achieve this aim through a variety of activities, meetings, training courses, visits and exhibitions. and by providing a network of skilled and experienced members willing and happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. the railway is run solely by a group of dedicated volunteers and is open for train rides from easter till october. trains run on the the first sunday of each month. on bank holiday weekends we also run the trains on the sunday and bank holiday monday. our volunteers can often be found working on the railway at other times. we are always looking for more volunteers who would like to get involved. whether you wish to be a driver, guard, platform duties, signalman, engineering or just help with the maintenance, you will be working alongside a friendly group of volunteers sharing the same experience. show volunteering / membership roles > charity event in june on a sunday afternoon in the middle of june each year we welcome adults and children with special needs, their families and supporters to attend our railway.
